Depending on the type of property stolen and the value of the property stolen, theft crimes can range from misdemeanors, to 3rd degree felonies (punishable by up to 5 years in state prison), to very serious 1st degree felonies (punishable by up to 30 years in state prison).  However, the most common theft crimes are petit theft (when the value of the property stolen is from $0 to $300) and 3rd degree grand theft (when the value of the property is from $300 to $5,000).
